Although I will say that the fire fighter scenes were pretty intense regardless if they were only training or had to attend buildings that were on fire due to fireworks.
I understood this films backdrop involving the feeling of losing someone through drowning and honestly the ending was a near hard hitter for me. However I would have liked if the couples experience together was more in depth because as I said yet again, it was rather rushed. It didn't give much in depth either with the other guy who had a crush on her or if he was going for someone else. Since I'm not gonna say spoilers to telling you who's who, it's best to watch the film.
Animation wise, it was pretty alright. Not amazeballs but it was easy on the eyes at least.
As much as the film did offer a bit of emotion, it's not the ultimate worse or disappointment I've ever seen. However room for improvement is what it definitely definitely needs in terms of story pace development.

Invested in the characters, in love with the story, impressed by the animation, there's nothing I have to complain about. Even the twist, which I didn't see coming at all, was superbly The message of the film is great and the two secondary characters were pretty well executed. They both had their own life and issues related towards the male lead and showcasing that added a lot towards the detail on his death. Despite there being one scene that leaned towards the friend becoming the main female's second lover, it didn't bear any fruits. Michiru Oshima is great as always. It's a shame that half of the soundtrack is just the vocal track. However that is the only praise for it's story writing that I can give. The pacing is a mess. They're practically everywhere, so any attempt at making any form of romance media will inevitably seem cliche, because at this point, there's literally no original storytelling ground for them anymore. I myself have never been much for romance stuff, mostly because many of them are either annoyingly cliche, formulaic, melodramatic, or indulge in tropes that are so aggravating, you just want to punch a wall. I especially hate it when the main leads come across an obstacle, NEVER talk to each other about it in favor of dragging out the drama longer than it needs to, thereby ignoring “Ride your own wave. ” The plot of Ride Your Wave is both charming and tragic—charming in its first half and tragic in its second. The first half is about the beautiful story of two young people falling in love, and the second one is about the hard process of moving on after a great loss. There are two main characters: Minato Hinageshi, the brave and dependable young man who has his whole life put together; and Hinako Mukaimizu, the energetic and clumsy young woman who has no idea what she’s going to do with hers. By chance—or maybe fate—these two completely opposite people meet and start A little background: Kimi to, Nami ni Noretara (or Ride Your Wave, which I'll be referring to it as for the rest of this review) is the 2nd anime movie I've seen in theaters and the 1st one that hasn't been a side story for an airing anime. I tried to go into it with only the knowledge that Wikipedia and IMBD gave me, but I attended the movie with a friend of mine who went in totally blind. Based on both of our reactions throughout the film, I'd suggest going in not knowing the "twist" (because if you're good at spotting red flags you I really enjoyed Yuasa's Ride Your Wave. I had no emotions going into it really, I just wanted to watch a nice looking anime. I can't say this movie blew me away, but it stuck with me. I guess I'm getting into "spoiler" territory, but if you've seen even the trailer for this movie, then you know what's up. Ride Your Wave shows how people cope with the loss of a loved one, and while the presentation is often very silly and lighthearted, the emotions are very real. I found it tough to relate to Hinako's bubbly personality, but it was easy to connect with what she *Spoilers, just in case* This is quite possibly one of the cutest and funniest animated films I've seen from Masaaki Yuasa. Unfortunately, it didn't "punch" as well as others. If you watch the theatrical trailer before seeing the film you will be in for a surprise. Yes, the trailer spoils the crux of the film, but the trailer touches nothing about our main characters and how amazingly developed they are. If the story wasn't as comical as it was, I think I would have cried a lot more, but I also think this to be a fault of the animation style. Don't get me wrong, this film is Feb 19, 2020 This movie was pretty good! Alright, so I'm a Yuasa fan. However, that doesn't mean I like his stuff no matter what it is; it means I have high expectations of his work. I skipped a class to drive an hour to see this film. And, it was pretty good. Things I liked; the main character relationship. There is a perfect montage in this movie that that alone almost made me cry. It was so impactful! The music, SLAPPED! While I concede Gene Kelly is a great dancer and is so smooth and in control of his body it is like he dances on ice, the film itself is painfully weak in nearly all story telling respects. First off, Jerry Mulligan is an ahole. He treats both women poorly and deserves to be penniless and alone. He comes off like a modern-day 40 year old pervert who lurks around bars hitting on women half his age by being aggressive and demanding. No women fall for this pathetic "midlife crisis" routine, unless the man has money and/or class. Mr. Mulligan has neither. He also does not have the intellect of an artist, which might at least make him an interesting sophisticate. He essentially has nothing to offer.
As for the female wealthy sponsor, why on earth would she take an interest in this loser? She meets him by witnessing his pretentious attack of a young American woman trying to enjoy her summer trip to Paris. Excuse me Jerry, but when did you become such a wise man of the world? He then insults the girl as a typical American Jerry, have you forgotten your roots? You too are an American. Get over yourself, you hack overblown house painter. I still don't get why the wealthy woman would find his boorish behavior interesting. Then, his manners (drinks before she is served, doesn't say thank you, makes a blatant ass of himself oodling over the young woman at the bar in front of company he does not know well, etc, etc, etc) are disdainful. She may be lonely, but she is clearly slumming it with this jerk and deserves much more. A major problem with the film is she should know this. They try to play it off by having her male friend, while dancing with her, imply she is a sucker for what she considers to be talented artists, but Jerry is way out of her league and her character would know this given how they portray her otherwise.
Which brings me to my main point and main problem with this movie. I honestly hoped everyone we met during the movie ended up happy but Jerry. He is the worst of all those people. An unappreciative, self-absorbed ignoramous with no consideration for those around him. Let's recap. He uses the wealthy woman's feelings for him to get what he wants. He does nothing to help his "friend" Adam nor takes an interest in his life. He steals the young woman from Henri, even after finding out that he was with Lisse. He never once talked to Henri or explained the situation, then when it went his way in the end that was all fine to him. I was absolutely put off by this character. He is the fact that he ends up happy while having destroyed everyone around him yet he is completely unaffected by the destruction he has caused makes me ill.
Therefore, I conclude this movie to be terrible. The characters respond to Jerry unrealistically while he arrogantly struts through the movie as if he's untouchable.
If the director intended to be unbelievably subtle and ironic by creating a setting of happiness and creativity where it is almost impossible to be unhappy while placing a huge jerk in the center, then I give him the highest applause in the world. He has convinced the world this movie has a happy ending and is cheery, yet meanwhile the worst character of them all ends up happy by lying to get rich (via art show) and bullies love out of a young, naive girl. If that is the real intent, then the director is a genius and I highly respect his fooling the world and painting a false picture (intentional painting reference here) that viewers of the film thought was beautiful. The irony director on the surface painted a love story, but reality is that it was an ugly story (just like Jerry's painting which we were to believe showed talent but in reality was terrible and we all knew it.
Aside from the character issue, the plot is bland and the movie moves disjointedly. It is a poor film unless the irony was, it is an arthouse classic with major cinematic issues.

Leslie Caron's perky smile and laugh are winning but she seems truly heartbroken only when backed by Gershwin. It's less a variety musical than a romantic fusion. Gene Kelly's performance in the big `An American in Paris Ballet' integrates dance and music so closely together that he seems to personify the spirit of George Gershwin. Busby Berkeley and to some extent Michael Powell's big dance extravaganzas made the camera an active participant in the flow of music and dance, but Kelly's choreography unites music, dance camera and performance into a seemingly living entity. Add to that John Alton's intense colour lighting (with difficult, choreographed lighting changes) and the Ballet may be the most complicated dance ever put on film. It's an almost perfect collaboration. Vincente Minnelli's spectacular design motifs here are in much better balance. The ballet progresses through a parade of classic painting styles that mimic artists like Utrillo, Renoir and Van Gogh. Perhaps the best compliment for the Ballet is that it does full justice to George Gershwin. The music stands alone as a supremely emotional experience, and the Ballet only heightens it. There's none of the oddball mismatches of music and visuals that one remembers from certain segments in Fantasia. `An American in Paris' is Hollywood filmmaking worthy of superlatives. Blu-ray Video Quality – The video quality on this Blu-ray release is in a full 1080p encoded image in the 1. 33:1 aspect ratio. The first thing that will catch your eye with this release obviously, is that residual 1950′s Technicolor looks. Perhaps it was the intention, but I do have to say at several points in the film the colour palette goes from harsh to seriously intense, not by any means "popping" off the screen in a pleasing manner. Now, don't get me wrong, scenes doused in neutrals from the wardrobe to the set design actually look very nice, though there is still the subject of the flesh tones existent. The flesh tones harbour the most blush-esque of bright orange hues, and this look continues through the entire film, fluctuating in that Technicolor way you've seen on other elder classics, as an actor moves across the screen passing the horizontal flickers all shades of the palette alternate in tones. The blaring colour palette is heightened by the definite solid black level; so solid, some scenes in which actors are clothed in an abundance of black actually gives them an appearance of animation. This solid black level may be dead on, but it tends to bring out the hard-core saturation, which is often bleeding with more bold hues, creating a near glare at the presence of such vividness, and more importantly, taking away the presence of detail. The late Gene Kelly had an extremely expressive face, and though it needs to be understood that this film has endured some aging, much of the detail of facial features is absent; this quality also applies to all other visual definition aspects of the film, from the costumes, to the set design as well. A good example of this is at the runtime of about 32 minutes and 20 seconds, where Milo is wearing an open back dress, and the scene involves some shots from behind her. Where we would normally see the contours of the shoulder blades, the bleeding/pixilation and harsh colour saturation make the visible flesh tone of her back appear as one smooth piece. Overall, you have to give credit where it is due, and it is evident that this release is what it is with special efforts, as are most classic catalogue titles that have made their way to Blu-ray recently. Keep in mind that when you see this film on Blu-ray what you are seeing was created by filmmakers over 50 years ago, and through so many different processes, this will be the best presentation you can own at this time. Purists will also surely be proud, as this release hasn't gone through significant changes, still possessing many qualities that will keep it in a very original form. Though, when comparing a film from this era to others of the genre that have made their way to Blu-ray. Blu-ray Audio Quality – The audio quality on this release is presented in 1. 0 Dolby Digital Mono. It was a great choice on behalf of Warner Bros. to stick with the original mono track for this films Blu-ray release, providing a more sincere, and realistic experience connecting to a time long past, not to mention the film's content that is present would have made for a label of "overkill" if a more voluminous track had been included. There are just a few issues that occur on this audio track though. Occasionally, there is hissing present, usually during a pause in a musical number. Also, at least 2 to 3 times during the abundance of tap dancing that occurs throughout the film, the sounds of "tapping" are out of sync with what we see happening visually. On a more positive note, all of the vocals are carried out nicely, and shouts and emphasized vocals have a bit of an acoustic quality. Overall, this audio track suits the film in a justifying manner.
