It comes across as a mix between an artistic attempt, and a film mixing in what genre fans love; but at the end of the day, it couldnt quite connect the two. It comes across as a hollow attempt to bring us something different. The story goes in all sorts of odd directions, and it never really finds its footing. Lets get one thing straight; this film absolutely looks great. The use of lighting, the film-style, the close-ups, and many of those attempts to do something different work well. The big issue is the fact that… "you would do well to limit the number of words that come out of your mouth. Creepy guy, but good advice for this movie. 2020 Ranked: It's still technically January so fuck you all, here is Gretel and Hansel. This film sucked. It's edgelord fairy tales for teenagers too lame to sneak into Rated R films. It looks like a David Lynch fanboy made a horror film for the CW. The score constantly builds toward crap. I guess I'm saying I didn't care for it. Nope its terrible your honor its really terrible Can't really tell you why I didn't love this one. I had the same reaction to Blackcoat's Daughter; I liked it but. The visuals here were great, loved the production design. The score was amazing. The acting was terrific, especially Alice Krige. It just didn't come together for me. Maybe seeing this in an upstairs room of an American Legion Hall wasn't ideal. I'd definitely watch it again. If only to see all the fairy take stuff I missed the first time. It's got pieces of Suspiria, Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, and Alice in Wonderland. I'm sure they're are many, many more. It's good but just not great for me. Recent reviews Wonderful twist on the classic fairy tale that focuses on female empowerment and having agency as a female in a harsh world. Atmospherically creepy, great cinematography, striking iconography, and a tour de force performance from the stellar Alice Krige. Sort of a spiritual sibling to the vvitch. This one was very odd. I came in thinking it was going to be like every other modern horror film, either a Blumhouse joint or a bad Ari Aster knockoff. Instead, we get a really weird and arty tone-poem budget spooky thing. I really liked the visuals and thought the performances were just the right amount of intentionally clunky and weird. Everything was just slightly askew from what I would expect and thus, kept me unnerved and entertained through its entire run time. I will say, it is very short but feels LONG because it is such a simple story and they really did not try to build a "verse" or even add extra lore to the popular story. They… this felt like a really long episode of television You can really see the movie this almost was. So moody and atmospheric, slowly building to a bonkers mushroom trip from hell conclusion. but instead we get an awkward twist and an annoying epilogue. I just know that Oz Perkins has a wildly different cut of this movie sitting somewhere. I wanna see that. Still, I think Oz did a great job with this script. Sophia Lillis did a great job. Alice Krige did a great job. Cinematographer Galo Olivares did a GREAT job. Samuel Leakey did not do a great job. "Theres no breadcrumb trail in Gretel & Hansel. No gingerbread house, either. The menacing old woman at the dark heart of the story lives in a postmodernist isosceles art piece. Rather than being a one-dimensional cannibal, shes a witch operating on her own lore – her magic powers evident in a pitch-black pigmentation bleeding down her fingers. All this is to say that Gretel & Hansel, the new grimdark fairy tale horror adaptation by Osgood Perkins, is weird. Full review on Cinematary: Studios- stop papering over weakly plotted films with excessive/intrusive narration. Do that challenge. If Gretel & Hansel were a book, it would consist of beautiful prose but you might not be able to finish it due to a winding, leisurely plot that lacks a unique throughline. The movie seems to think it does; it's positioned as a cool take on feminism within the confines of a Grimm tale with all of the aesthetic trappings of Robert Eggers. What's not to love? Unfortunately, it's that all-too cynical take on feminism; the kind where the movie throws out that a woman hates men in a misguided effort to offer some sort of depth. It's not a bad technique if they actually decide to delve in and give some deeper characterization but becomes a bad faith argument… Fantastic visuals, cinematography, production design, and musical score. A story that had a lot of potential and many intriguing ingredients. Great performance by Alice Krige. All let down by an inexcusably stupid set of voice-over narrations that sucks the life out of the film and dumbs it down to the point that it loses its own sense of mystery and wonder. There's also a ham-fisted attempt to do a minor plot twist that only adds confusion. The voice-overs and the little twist cause the viewer to start trying to pick apart narrative threads and logic gaps that don't hold up under scrutiny. You don't want to start questioning the storytelling mechanics and realism of a fairy tale, but that's exactly… From approaching this movie I was expecting a C list horror movie with some loud music and jump scares and would be forgotten in the next month. I was planning on ignoring this movie and waiting for something else to come out in theaters. But after receiving a 15 AMC gift card I thought, why not? From someone who does not enjoy horror movies and would get scared easily as a viewer I would say this movie has minor scares but does not rely on its horror genre to tell a “grim” version of the famous fairytale Hansel and Gretel. Oz Perkins chooses to tell a story of growing up and personal destiny between the two siblings. But doesnt go… Popular Lists 2020 Every movie that gets a wide/Streaming service release (in the US) in 2020 RANKED from my most favorite to least….

Everyone knows the classic story of Hansel and Gretel. The German fairy tale credited to the Brothers Grimm has served as a cautionary tale aimed at wandering children since its publication in 1812. Numerous storytellers have placed their unique spin on the narrative over the years, though none have approached the terror found in Osgood Perkins upcoming chiller. Gretel & Hansel, the twisted take on the seminal story, opens in theaters on January 31. Like the original, the film will pit two children against a timeless adversary. But Perkins isnt afraid, in the least bit, to turn the story on its head and make exciting creative changes to give his audience something theyve never seen on screen before. We spoke with the director about his pending horror movie, and the five distinct updates he made to the beloved fairy tale. Its A Coming-Of-Age Story About A Young Woman As you can tell from the title, Gretel (Sophia Lillis of IT and IT Chapter Two) is the lead character in Osgood Perkins version- a reversal that was long overdue for the Grimm fantasy story and turns it into a female-focused production. “I dont think Hansel and Gretel ever is thought of as that, ” Perkins tells us, emphasizing that it will serve as an origin story for Gretel. As for the casting of Lillis in this lead role, Perkins shares, “[She] is not only already horror royalty and immediately identifiable by audiences as someone they want to follow – which is so important in today's ridiculously, grotesquely overcrowded landscape of movies and shows – but she is someone people are magnetically drawn to. They can't help it, and thats an automatic win right out of the gates. She's a major star in the making. ” Being marketable is one thing. Perkins goes on to rave about Lillis inherent talents as a leading lady, though, emphasizing what her casting means to the on-screen quality of Gretel & Hansel. “She is one of those actors who doesn't need to do anything on camera to be fascinating, ” Perkins said. “The camera understands her in a way that it has understood a few people in film-acting history. Shes super sophisticated, and her eyes tell everything. ” The ‘Old World Is Nonexistent Here Because the fairy tale has been around for centuries, theres a certain “old world” aesthetic thats present in most tellings of the story. Osgood Perkins emphasized that he is staying far away from that in his version. Dont expect modern-day New York City or anything like that. But he makes it abundantly clear, “Theres no villagers or town squares with, like, chickens and shit. There's no thatched roofs, no buckles on shoes. There's none of that. ” In their place, we get modern flourishes that are untethered to a specific time period. “The witchs house looks like a nightmare, ” Perkins said. “The kids clothing is based more on a turn-of-the-century Soviet look. ” Thats something we definitely havent seen before when telling this vintage Grimm fairy tale. Also, Supporting Characters Have Been Cast Aside As Hansel and Gretel go about their way in the original Grimm story, they run into various benevolent folks who help them reach their destiny in the witchs domain. But in an effort to attain a feeling of hopelessness and isolation, Osgood Perkins stripped away the non-essentials. “Every day, when I was asked how many extras do I want, my answer was, I wanted zero, ” he tells us. “There are no people in the movie who aren't named. There are no extras. No townspeople, There's no crotchety old blind person in the alley. ” When asked why he made the choice to eliminate the background population, Perkins explained, “I wanted it to feel almost apocalyptic. Like this is as bad as the world gets. There's no people left. There's no comfort. ” The Witch Is Definitely A Cannibal If you couldnt already tell, Osgood Perkins wants Gretel & Hansel to feel bleak. At the end of the trailer, the movie is described as “a grim fairy tale. ” In keeping, Osgoods witch (played by Alice Krige) isnt just frightening. “We leaned into cannibalism, ” Perkins proudly states, “which is usually sort of suggested by the story, but we went there. ” In other words, keep the kids at home. Osgood has turned the moderately creepy tale into a full-blown dystopian horror story, and we are here for that. Shes Also A Fully Formed Character You can bet theres an oven waiting for Lillis and young Sammy Leakey, who plays her brother Hansel. But Perkins and his co-screenwriter, Rob Hayes, properly developed the witch as a multi-faceted character so Krige would have several layers to explore. “Our witch character is a fully formed, fully rounded, devastated, soulful human being, as opposed to some kind of a caricature, ” Perkins said. “She's an actual hurting human being. ” As for what Perkins saw in casting Krige, the director admits, “I didn't know what I was looking for in the witch. Everybody kept saying, ‘Whats the witch going to be like? And I kept saying, ‘I have no idea until I see it! And then Alice made a tape for us that was so vibey and so textural and so atmospheric. I don't even know if she meant it to be, but it just was. She was instantly the only person who could have done the part, and Im too lucky to have her. ” Audiences will be able to see what Osgood Perkins has in store for young Sophia Lillis and Sammy Leakey when Orion Pictures Gretel & Hansel revamps the classic and terrifies audiences on January 31, 2020.

Very nice.
When I was about to watch this I was thinking of another Riddick Movie, Then Vin Diesel popped up. Thinking I could predict the future I was eagerly waiting for Riddick 2 to be the title or something similar but I guess that was just a fantasy.

A lot or a little? The parents' guide to what's in this movie. It's possible to be overly suspicious and practical; it's not necessarily true that "nothing is given unless something is taken away. Once you find your own inner strength, you're more able to take action. Positive Role Models & Representations While movie deals with strong women characters, they're not necessarily positive ones. One is certainly evil (she eats children) and young character must choose between darkness and light. and it's uncertain which path she'll choose. Gretel starts out being suspicious and practical to a fault; she's defensive, protective. But as story goes on, she finds her inner strength, is able to take action. Some scary, shocking moments. Creepy nightmare scenes. A zombie-like monster attacks the kids; Gretel knocks its eye out with a rock, and it's shot in the head. A bucket of guts and body parts is dumped on a table, with a severed baby's arm tossed on top. A character is burning/on fire, screaming in pain. Blood seeps through sheets during a nightmare. A character inserts a red-hot poker into his mouth with the intention of killing himself (nothing is shown. A horse keels over and dies. Black, blood-like goop shown in several scenes. A man asks a teen girl whether her "maidenhood" is "intact" i. e., whether she's a virgin. She gets her period in one scene, wakes up looking uncomfortable, is then shown washing her clothes. Drinking, Drugs & Smoking Two hungry kids eat mushrooms from the forest floor and have a brief, fairly mild "psychedelic" trip. Stay up to date on new reviews. In GRETEL & HANSEL, it is a time of famine and hardship. A widow, at her wits' end, throws her children out of the house to fend for themselves. Older sister Gretel ( Sophia Lillis) takes charge of her younger brother, Hansel ( Samuel Leakey) but it's not long before they get hungry. A hunter ( Charles Babalola) helps them along, and soon they find a house with an inviting feast laid out on the table. An old woman ( Alice Krige) invites the children in and allows them to stay, for a little while, in exchange for doing some chores. Gretel fears that something is wrong, but then the old woman starts teaching her about how to unleash her inner, hidden strengths. Everything seems to be going fine... until Hansel disappears. Is it any good? This strange, austere, artful, violent retelling of the old fairy tale is one of those movies that's more moody than scary. It won't be to every taste, but it's weirdly poetic and mesmerizing. With Gretel & Hansel and two previous chillers ( The Blackcoat's Daughter, I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House) director Osgood "Oz" Perkins  -  the son of Psycho star Anthony Perkins -  has established himself as a confident, patient creator of chills who takes risks and is decidedly out of the mainstream. His focus on framing, textures, shapes, silences, and music -  rather than jump scares, shocks, or screaming -  makes his films a little harder to sell. His Gretel & Hansel, with Gretel now coming first in the title, is also a story about women. Triangles permeate the film, suggesting the strength of both the witch and Gretel, and Perkins plays around with other recurring themes and symbols, too. The overall tone can feel a bit academic and perhaps a bit chilly, but the casting saves the day. Lillis, who was so delightful and spunky in the two It films, warms up her scenes with her character's younger brother, and Krige (the Borg Queen in Star Trek: First Contact) has a slithery quality that makes her witch somehow hypnotic. The throwback electronic music score by French composer Rob also helps create an unsettling, otherworldly quality. But overall, this is a movie about a young woman moving from a defensive position in the world to a more powerful offensive one. Talk to your kids about...
