I wake up to the sound of water running. Damn it. As usual Sam beat me to the shower. I take advantage of this and snooze until Sam gets out. “About time. ” I say with a good deal of snark. “It does take time to reach this level of beauty. ” “True. I’ll see you next week. ” “Very funny. ” Sam quips. I sigh and toss my covers off. I head towards the bathroom to take my usual lukewarm shower. When I get out Sam is sitting on her bed. She stands and walks over to me. She holds her pendent out. “Come on. ” I close my eyes and sigh as I tilt my head back. “Oh, come on. Serious? ” “No excuses. Let do this. ” There is no escaping this. I bring my pendent up and click it against hers. “Twinsies. ” “Twinsies! ” Sam says excitedly. “Are we done now? ” “Yes we are. You have been a good girl. ” I raise an eyebrow. “Good girl? ” Sam replies with “Yes. Good girl. Perhaps you will get a treat later. ” I grab Sam and toss her on the bed. With one arm I hold her down and with the other one I start tickling her in the side. Sam screeches and laughs. “Good girl? ” I ask. “Well not now. ” Sam exclaims while laughing. I keep tickling Sam’s aside. Laughing still but running out of breath Sam starts to plead. “Faust. Stop. I’m going to pee my pants. ” “I don’t care. This is your bed. ” “I’m serious Faust. Please. ” I stop and let Sam up. She heads in the bathroom as I sit and retie my shoes. Just as I finish she walks out “Thanks for letting me up. Such a good girl. ” “You little bitch. ” I say as Sam takes off laughing. I chase her down the stairs and throughout the house. We stop when we get to the dining room. Sam runs around the table and looks at me. “Ok. Timeout. ” “There is no timeout from me hunting you down. ” “Yes there is. After breakfast we can resume. ” She sits down and I sit next to her. “Good girl. Now eat your food. ” I slap her arm. She slaps mine back then we start playfully slap fighting. Eventually we stop and eat our gruel. Once done we put the bowls in the sink. We start walking upstairs we are stopped by Aunt Suzi and Katie standing in the hallway blocking our path. “What are you do doing? ” She asks. “Just playing around. ” Sam answers. “Keep it down. What if you wake up your mother and father with all of your nonsense? ” “We will apologize to them if we do that. ” Sam shoots back. Katie moans at me. “Watch your mouth, bitch. ” I say to her. She lunges at me and I lunge at her. Aunt Suzi grabs her while Sam grabs me. “No, no. ” Aunt Suzi coos to Katie. “No, Faust. Noting good will come out of this. ” Katie looks at Sam with anger. I know this because I was still staring Katie down. Aunt Suzi turns back to us. “Your mother and father should be tougher on you two hooligans. ” “Us? Your bitch daughter has started every fight. ” I yell. “Shut your dirty mouth, whore. My Katie is perfect. ” Aunt Suzi says as she smooths Katie’s hair. “Cooler heads will prevail. Family shouldn’t fight like this. ” Sam pleads. “Cold day in hell. ” I whisper. “Faust! ” Sam exclaims. “What did she say? ” Demands Aunt Suzi. Sam turns and stands facing Aunt Suzi and Katie. While forming a wall between us. “Nothing. I say we go our separate ways and maybe talk about this when everybody has cooled down. ” Aunt Suzi turns Katie around. “Perhaps when you two have learned your place. ” “That’s not nice. ” Sam says. Aunt Suzi and Katie ignore her and walk into Katie’s room. When the door shuts. Sam looks at me. “What was that? ” “They don’t like me and I’m tired of their bullshit. ” I simply say. “There is much more going on. Apparently more happened while I was sick than I thought. This is worse than I thought. ” “You have no idea. ” “Tell me everything that has happened. Everything. ” “Let’s go. ” I tell Sam every minute detail of what happened while she was gone. When I’m done she puts a hand on my knee. “We’ll figure this out. ” I put my hand on hers. “Here’s the thing. I don’t want to figure this out. ” “Faust…” I stand up. “I don’t want to talk about it. Let’s go. I’m sure dad is up and has a mission for us. ” Sam starts to protest but I cut her off. I walk towards the downstairs. Reluctantly Sam follows. On the way to the office we run into Mom. “Hey mom. Is Dad awake? ” Sam asks. Mom stares at us with no emotion. Her voice was monotone but had an edge to it. “I don’t know. I suppose you can check. ” “Is there something wrong? ” I ask. “I don’t care if he is awake. Feel free to talk to him and receive your next folly. ” “Ok. We will. ” Sam says as we start walking. “What was that all about? ” Sam asks me. That was weird. ” I answer. I don’t remember Dad and mom fighting before. Something was up between them. Sam and I go to the office. Sam knocks and we wait. “Enter. ” We walk in and take our positions. Sam slightly leans over. “Do you have anything for us today? ” Dad snaps at her. “Do I work for you? Is it my job to find things for you to do? Hummmm? ” Sam leans backwards shocked. I can tell she is disturbed at this outburst. I speak up. “No. You are sending us out to help you and the family. ” Dad clears his throat. “True. I apologize. I’m sorry I was short with you Samantha. Your mother and I are quarreling. ” “We just saw mother. She was angry too. What are you fighting about? ” “Just a matter of difference of opinion. Sometimes our agendas converge, sometimes they do not. ” Something hits me weird about that last statement dad just made. I keep silent about it. “So will you work it out? ” Sam asks. “We have before. We will again I’m sure. Don’t worry yourselves about it. That being said, I do have something for you two. ” “What is it? ” I ask. “Yeah. What is it? ” Sam adds. “Something a little different. Instead of artifacts, I need you to find a flower. ” Sam raises an eyebrow. “A flower? Why do you need a flower? ” “For a project I’m working on. Please bring it back. Roots and all. ” Sam still looks a bit confused. “Ok…should be no problem. ” “Just give us time before we leave. We will need different tools. ” “That’s fine. Just come back as soon as you can with the flower. ” Sam smiles and slaps the desk as she gets off of it. “Will do. ” Dad hands over a folder to Sam. She takes it and walks out. I follow her out of the office. It took us about an hour to gather our stuff for the trip. Most of the time was spent looking for a spade in the garage to dig the flower up. Finally, when we are done, we are off in the Jag. On the way I stop for gas. There me and Sam make small talk. “Done studying already? ” I joke. “Just taking a break. I’ll get back to it when we are back on the road. ” “So what have you learned so far? ” “The flower we are looking for is really small. It’s colored purple and red, with white highlights. ” “Highlights? ” “Like the edges are white. ” “Got it. ” We become silent as the gas pump clicks away the gallons. That is until I break it. “What do you think mom and dad are fighting about? ” “I can’t even imagine. I agree with father. They will work it out. ” “I’m not so sure. ” “Why on earth would you say that? ” “Just a feeling. I just think they are in a real dark fight. ” Sam leans and puts her hand on the roof of the car. “Why do you think that? ” “I don’t know, Sam. Just a feeling. ” Sam turns back and leans against the car now. “You got good instincts but this time. I’m not so sure. ” “Well. We will see won’t we? ” “I guess we will. ” The pump stops and within seconds we are on the road. Sam reopens the folder as she looks at me. “How much longer? ” “I would say we have a while. Late tomorrow morning I would guess. ” Sam closes the folder. “What are you doing? ” I ask. “It’s too dark to read. I’m getting some shut eye. ” “Alright. ” Sa leans the seat back and closes her eyes. The last time she was in that position, things were much different. I adjust my weight and get comfortable for the long drive ahead. Night fully falls and headlights guide me on the way. As the yellow lines pass, my mind begins to wonder. The solution to the mystery around me seems unreachable. How are we supposed to figure out why these sick looking, strange people stalking me? At a certain point, I might have to confront one of them to find my answers. I think about the mission we are currently on. I don’t think the Children of the Eons will bother us. They protect artifacts not flowers. So this should go smoothly. I think about other things as I drive. At one point something moves just outside of my window. I look over and see nothing in the sky. Stupid. Like there would be something flying next to me. My mind must be playing tricks on me. It happens sometimes while driving a long drive on a lonely road. I focus myself but that doesn’t last long. I hear Sam whisper as she sleeps. “Falling asleep while angels scream is a pleasure to end all pleasures. ” My grip on the wheel tightens. My heart rate begins to climb.. I steal glances at her as I drive. Damn it Sam. Don’t do this again. Don’t have a spell now. I fill with worry. What if Sam is getting sick again? Does she need more treatment? I hope not. I pay attention to Sam as I drive. As the sun rises and she wakes up and greets me in her normal happy voice. “Morning. ” “About time you woke up slacker. ” Sam laughs. “Funny. How close are we? ” “Close. We made good time. ” “With your lead foot no doubt. Pull over. I got to pee. ” I nod as I gently pull over on empty highway. “What are you doing? ” Sam asks. “Pulling over so you can pee. ” “I don’t see any restrooms around here. ” “Right there. There is restrooms all around as long as you stay nearby. Toughen up princess. ” “What if a car comes? ” “I doubt it. Haven’t seen a car in hours. Go now or pee your pants. ” Sam let’s out an exasperated sigh and opens the door and gets out. She pulls down her pants and squats next to the car. As she does her business, I look back. “Oh shit! A car is coming! ” I yell. “What? ” Sam screams as she looks around. When she sees nothing she scowls at me. “You bitch. That’s not funny. ” “Yes it was” I reply laughing. Sam finishes, pulls her pants back up and gets back in. I’m still laughing. She shuts the door and slaps my arm. “Not funny. ” “If you saw your face, you would be laughing too. ” Sa sits back and folds her arms. I put the car in drive and pull back onto the road. Within a couple of hours we reach our destination. “This should be it. ” Sam says looking around. “Let’s go then. ” “Hold on. I’m almost done reading. ” I say as I close my eyes to take a power nap. I don’t know how long it was but I’m woken up by Sam screaming. “Oh shit! ” “What? ” I say as I open my eyes. “We got a problem. ” “What kind of problem? ” I ask. “This flower only blooms at the light of the full moon. Lucky for us, that’s tonight. ” “Damn. Ok. I’m going to get some sleep. Later we will look for it. When we find it we just wait for that moment. Dig it up. Go home. ” “Sounds like a plan. ” “Good night. ” “Night, Faust. ” I go back to sleep. I wake up sometime around one in the afternoon. “Ready, sleeping beauty? ” Sam asks “Yup. ” I say. Good thing we are out in the woods. The trees kept the sun from baking us as we searched. “Let’s split up and cover more ground for a bit. ” Sam suggests. We will meet back here in a hour. ” We split up. Sam goes one way and I go the other. As I walk among the trees. I get a sense someone is watching me. I look around. Fearful it’s Sam having a spell. I hear a crack of a branch. I spin around and see two people, a woman and a man looking at me from a distance. My fight or fight response kicks in. The man had a black beard. The girl looked like the other one I saw except there was no red streak in her hair. She looks so much like the other girl, it’s scary. The man whispers to the girl. She pushes him away and starts running towards me. The man roughly grabs her. He whispers again and forcibly takes her away. My breath is heavy and my knuckles are white from gripping my fairy stick so tightly. I pulled it out as the girl started running towards me. In a blink of an eye they are gone. Shame and rage washes over me. I had my shot to confront them and find out what they wanted but I froze. Full of talk in the car but in real life, I froze. I start searching for them in the woods but find nothing. Angry, I go back to my search for the flower. When the hour is up I go back to the meeting place. I get there and wait for a couple minutes until Sam shows up. “I think I may have found it. ” She says. “Show me. ” Sam smiles and leads the way. I say nothing about my encounter. I want to wallow in my secret cowardice for a good long while. Sam leads me to a stream. Both banks are made out of rocks. On the north bank there was a shallow hole among the rocks. In the hole grew a flower colored purple and red. It’s petals we’re closed up. Protecting the rest of the flower. I get a wave of déjà vu. Like I’ve seen something like this before. “I really think this is it. “Now we wait. I sit down next to the flower. Sam just looks at me. “What? We just gonna sit here? It’s going to be hours before the sun sets. ” “Fine. Go to the car if you want. I’m staying here. ” I’m still angry and ashamed from my failure earlier. ” “There is something wrong with you. Why are you so pissed? ” I look up at Sam. “Just not in the mood to be interrogated. ” “Fine…you going to stay here? ” “Yup. ” “Then get eaten alive by mosquitoes. I’ll be back later. ” “I’ll wait with baited breath. ” “Such a bitch. ” Sam says just before turning around and going to the car. Once I’m alone, I decide to take a nap. The sound of water gently passing by is the perfect lullaby. Before I totally fall asleep, I hear something nearby. I sit up and see a light fur wolf creeping towards me. I pull out my fairy stick…slowly. We look each other in the eye as the wolf draws nearer. There is a second movement in the high grass. A large black wolf jumps out and attacks the light fur one. They fight for a few seconds. Growling and snapping at each other. It ends with the black wolf clamping down with its mouth on the other wolf’s neck. The light fur wolf yips and whines as it struggles. After a couple minutes it stops struggling. From what I can tell, the black wolf isn’t really hurting the other one. It’s bite isn’t strong enough to really hurt. Just hard enough to show who is the boss. Once the light fur wolf submits the black wolf lets go. The light fur wolf puts its head down but takes a couple steps towards me. The black wolf barks with a scary ferocity. The light fur wolf stops and turns around. The wolves leave with the black wolf following the light fur one. It looks like the black one is following to keep the light fur wolf from doing anything like coming after me again. I watch them until they disappear in the woods. I sit there and think about how scary that was. My heart is pounding. What the hell was that by the way? I’ve never heard of wolves acting like that. I also have a intense feeling of familiarity. Like I’ve seen those exact wolves before. Even though I’ve never have. For the rest of the day I constantly check my surroundings. I finally conclude that they are gone. It becomes sunset and Sam walks up and sits next to me. “Hey. ” There’s no time like the present. Sorry I was short with you earlier. ” “Why were you so angry? ” Sam asks. I take a deep breath. “I saw more strange people today. I was going to confront them but I chickened out. ” “Really? When did you see them? ” “When we split up. Saw them disappear in the woods. After our fight. I saw wolves. I think one tried to attack me but a second wolf stopped it. ” “Jesus, Faust. Are you ok? ” “Yeah. I’m fine. I’m more angry we fought and split up. You’re my sister. I’m supposed to protect you. What if you had a spell while we were separated? ” “I’m fine. ” Sam says as she puts an arm around my shoulders. She then puts her head on my shoulders. “I couldn’t ask for a better sister. I love you Mary. ” She lifts her pendent. ” Im stunned by the fact she called me Mary. That’s not my name. I take a second then lift my pendent and click it against hers. ” Sam smiles and we watch the sunset. I don’t know why she called me Mary. I know Sam has her issues and if she does it again I’ll correct her. Right now I don’t care. Me and my sister are in the same page again. That’s all that matters. The sun sets and soon the moon rises. “Here we go. “Any minute now. ” Sam adds. We stand and move to the side so all of the moonlight will fall on the flower. Once the light hits it. The pedals start to open. As it does I have a imagine appear in my mind. A large flower opening its mouth to eat me. I shake my head and Sam looks at me. “You ok? ” “Yeah, fine. That’s the flower right? ” “Give it a sec then we will be a hundred percent sure. ” We watch the petals fully open. The flower did look exactly how Sam described it and it was beautiful. In fact even more so. The white parts around all of the edges glowed in the moonlight. Sam pulls out the spade and hands it to me. “That’s it. Let’s dig it up and go home. ” I say as I kneel next to the flower. Sam does the same and pulls out a small burlap bag as I dig. I make sure to dig around the roots. Sam puts on gloves. “What are those for? ” I ask. “From what I read. You don’t want to touch this with bare hands. ” I look down and see my bare hand very near the flower. “So…. I don’t get gloves? ” “Shit! I forgot. I’m sorry. Here. ” Sam hands over another pair of gloves. I put them on and finish digging. I reach down and pick up the plant as Sam opens the bag more. I gently pace it in the bag making sure it doesn’t touch my arms. Once done Sam pats the bag. Off to home then. ” “Could have told me about the glove thing. ” “I said I was sorry! ” “Uh huh. Seems like a weak alibi for the attempted murder of your sister. ” I joke. “Shut up. ” Sam yells. We make our way back to the car. Sam puts the bag in the trunk and secures it. Once that’s done we hop in and head home. On the way we stop and sleep. I time it just right where we get home just after dark. We get home and head straight to dad’s office. I knock since Sam is holding the bag. ” We walk in and Sam places the bag in the desk. “Is that what I think it is? ” Dad asks. “Yes it is. ” Sam answers beaming. Dad opens the bag. He runs his thumbs along the petals. I notice Sam makes a face as he does it. “I couldn’t be more pleased. This is your best work yet. Thank you both. ” “All in a days work. ” I reply. Well. You two should retire for the night. You have definitely earned it. Goodnight. ” Sam and I say goodnight and leave. We go straight to our room. Sam still has that weird face. “What’s up? ” I ask. “I…I…don’t know. It’s nothing I’m sure. ” “Don’t do that. What’s wrong? ” “It’s just he touched the pedals. ” “Come to think of it he did. So? ” “That’s the thing. There are only a few things that can touch the flower and not be harmed. ” “Like what? ” Sam looks at me with worry. “For one. The undead. ” [Mr. Lore: Sam is back! Yeah! ] ().
