Reviews of the times of bill cunningham
Omfg is that Mr. Darcy. So touching on 1:16:40 you can see how lonely and torn he was inside. Very moving. He lived for his work. Never had a love relationship and in my own opion kept a surtain distance to people. Very sadly. Looks like he was wracked with guilt because of the fact that he was gay. He oppressed his feelings of his chatholic origin. Must have been hard for him.

The Times of Bill Cunningham, a delightful documentary written and directed by Mark Bozek, hitherto most famous as CEO of the Home Shopping Network, chronicles the life of a true individualist. Many people viewing the film will instantly recognize the name of Bill Cunningham as the photographer of the fashionable for the New York Times. But as most who have seen his pictures in the Sunday Metropolitan section will realize, Bill’s view of “fashionable” was definitely not restricted to the rich and famous. He spent much of his career riding his bike through all the neighborhoods of Manhattan, and occasionally Brooklyn, looking for style. And style could be in the coats worn by 20-somethings on their way to the club scene, or boots on the feet of anyone jumping a puddle, or a bright color adorning an otherwise commonplace blouse. Bill Cunningham was an egalitarian famous for saying that Hollywood stars had little if any style. Now before you raise an eyebrow or dismiss this statement, he wasn’t saying that movie stars of the golden era (or presumably now) didn’t wear beautiful clothes. Wearing an outfit picked especially for you is not the same as knowing how to throw together your own outfit or look as if it was part of you and make a statement. He was always on the lookout for someone who lived the outfit and made it come alive. Much of his later career, and that would be the last 50 years of his life from the 60s to the teens, was photographing the stars of the monied world, the socialites, the fashion icons, and the fashion forwards like the Babe Paleys, the Gloria Vanderbilts, the Anna Wintours. But especially the preternaturally camera-shy Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis. Cunningham’s camera was inobtrusive; his photos, never posed. Always cheerful and upbeat, he was a welcome photography was his later in life career. His cameras were never top-of-the-line because, as he constantly insisted, he took “snap shots, ” not portraits. Bill Cunningham was a product of a conservative Boston Catholic family. He would accompany them to church on Sundays but was always more entranced with the hats worn by the ladies than by the pomp of the ceremony. When he decided he wanted to move to New York at the age of 19 his family disapproved but grudgingly allowed him to go provided he live with his aunt and uncle, also conservative. Working at the luxury department store Bonwit Teller was shameful, only made more acceptable when he landed a job in the advertising department. What he didn’t say was that he had also started designing hats on the side under the name “William J. ” Soon he was much in demand. But his notoriety soon delivered a double whammy. His aunt and uncle were scandalized to the point that he was no longer welcome in their home. Bonwit Teller soon fired him as well because, well probably because he didn’t share his sideline with them. But the freedom he was now involuntarily accorded allowed him to devote more time to his hats. Drafted into the army during the Korean War, he exaggerated his language expertise in French and was sent to Paris. There he became fully immersed in who was who and what was what in the high fashion world. He was a very quick study, made friends easily, and upon returning home, he found a nurturing mentorship within the salon of Chez Ninon, two women who ran a thriving business allegedly copying the designs of the French couturiers for a very up-market clientele who included Marilyn Monroe, Katherine Hepburn, and Jacqueline Bouvier, among many others. The business of “William J” was thriving and even the New York Times noted his artistry in stating that he had “cornered the face-framing market. ” But times change and with it, so does fashion. By the early 60s, hats were out and so was “William J. ” Briefly trying his hand at writing, despite being a notoriously bad speller, he had some success at Women’s Wear Daily. But it wasn’t what he wanted to do. Walking out on the street one day with a bare bones Olympus camera, a present from a friend who just instructed him to point and shoot, he captured the photo that set him on his future path. He saw a coat. That’s really all he saw. It was an all-encompassing coat worn with style, and he captured it. It was later, when the photo led to a further assignment for more “street shots, ” that it was pointed out to him who the wearer of said coat–the ultra-elusive Greta Garbo. And that, in essence, is the basis of this story. It was never about the person; it was always about the style. Even a homeless woman on the street might organize her possessions in a particularly remarkable way, or the girl walking up from the subway, on her way to her secretarial job, might be sporting a teal scarf, putting a punctuation mark on the beige of her blouse. Certainly in his long career as a photographer, a term he was loathe to use, he attended all the balls and social events on behalf of the New York Times for his column “Evening, ” capturing the conversations of the well-dressed rich and famous. But mostly, we waited to see who and what he would capture in his weekly themed piece of the people on the streets of New York called, appropriately enough “On the Street. ” It might be a color-theme: different shades of blue that seemed to pop up everywhere. It might be boots in all their forms and functions. But whatever it was, it made an impression on him that week and would make one on us. Unusual in its format, Bozak has used an interview he did of Cunningham in 1994. Cunningham had agreed to talk to him for a few minutes, minutes that went on far longer. It is Cunningham that we see and hear, illustrated with fashion stills, more recent film snippets of him on his bike or talking to the people he’s “snapping. ” He talks about the sadness of the AIDS era, about his famous and infamous neighbors in the Carnegie Hall studio apartments which became a latter day artist’s colony, about riding a bicycle all over Manhattan to find those “shots, ” but mainly about the fun he had doing what he loved best. And that’s what you’ll have with this documentary – fun and a love for a friend you never met but somehow knew, just the same. Opening Friday February 21 at the Laemmle Royal.

Soothing the Savage beast. Often the only girl singer that mattered to many of us. We will be watching. Bill Cunningham, who photographed fashion trends for the New York Times for almost 40 years, has died at 87, the newspaper confirmed. According to the paper, Cunningham died in New York City on Saturday after having recently been hospitalized for a stroke. The photographer was known for riding around the city on a bike, capturing pictures of trendy fashion items (recent entries included off-the-shoulder tops, ripped jeans and the color pink) to craft photo essays for his “On the Street” and “Evening Hours” columns. A 2009 profile of Cunningham in the New Yorker described these columns as “frequently playful” while still conveying “an elegiac respect for the anonymous promenade of life in a big city, and a serious desire to get it all down. ” Cunningham was awarded the Legion d’Honneur by the French government in 2008 and named a Living Landmark by the New York Landmarks Conservancy in 2009. A documentary film celebrating his work, Bill Cunningham New York, premiered at the Museum of Modern Art in N. Y. C. in 2010. “His company was sought after by the fashion world’s rich and powerful, yet he remained one of the kindest, most gentle and humble people I have ever met, ” Arthur Ochs Sulzberger Jr., publisher and chairman of the Times, said. “We have lost a legend, and I am personally heartbroken to have lost a friend. ” In a 2002 Times article entitled “Bill on Bill, ” Cunningham chronicled his own career, explaining how his style of photography has barely changed since he began taking pictures of people on the street during World War II. “The problem is I’m not a good photographer. To be perfectly honest, I’m too shy. Not aggressive enough. Well, I’m not aggressive at all, ” he wrote. “I just loved to see wonderfully dressed women, and I still do. That’s all there is to it. ” Cunningham described moving to N. at the age of 19 after dropping out of Harvard after just one term. Soon after, he opened a hat shop and began working at a drugstore and a Howard Johnson’s. After returning to New York from the Korean War in 1953, Cunningham worked briefly for Women’s Wear Daily and the Chicago Tribune. He received his first professional-grade camera in the late 1960s from photographer David Montgomery, and once he began taking pictures for the Times in the early 1970s, the rest was history. From left: Rihanna, Bill Cunningham and Stella McCartney in 2014 David X Prutting/BFA/REX/Shutterstock “I suppose, in a funny way, I’m a record keeper. More than a collector. I’m very aware of things not of value but of historical knowledge, ” he wrote. “I go out every day. When I get depressed at the office, I go out, and as soon as I’m on the street and see people, I feel better. But I never go out with a preconceived idea. I let the street speak to me. ”.
I love the line at the end of the video, “Young women, youre going to be an old woman some day. Dont worry about it. Dont sweat it. Dont worry about getting older. Every era builds character... Makoto Shinkai is a slave to love, really love a unique romance story. But, all of his works aren’t love stories you can get in Hollywood. This is Makoto Shinkai, after the successful hit of “Your Name”, he came across again in this movie about a kid falling in love with the Sunshine Girl. In addition, he really loves Japanese beliefs and myths especially, he uses the method of the rain and sun as its symbolism. Then you got ecocriticism combines with one of the gorgeous animations in 2019. Makoto Shinkai likes to explore human relations with others. Initially, “Weathering with You” became an ordinary slice of life with quite a lot of modern Japanese satire in Tokyo. For Shinkai, it’s not karma if God never gives sunny weather to Tokyo. Not the kind of style you really want to find like “Se7en“. Every day it rains, obviously, Tokyo never enjoys a sun. For Hodaka (Kotarou Daigo), he tried to settle in Tokyo after being fed up with his parents’ behavior towards him. This sixteen-year-old boy made Tokyo an escape place where he wanted to live independently. After trying to find employment opportunities to the point of being offered to work as a sex worker, Hodaka found himself saved by a magazine editor. Keisuke (Shun Oguri) likes to write supernatural phenomena. In one of his assignments, Keisuke told Hodaka to look for the existence of the Sunshine Girl. According to a Shinto belief, the Sunshine Girl can manipulate the weather and illuminate the dark side covering the Tokyo sky. The relationship between Hodaka and Hina (Nana Mori) begins, becoming a benchmark for the story; making an upside-down emotion, like a rollercoaster. But, they didn’t know how sad the consequences would be after the sun’s rays hit Tokyo. So, is “Weathering with You” as good as “Your Name”? It’s not really, but there is so much point “Your Name” isn’t really touched. First, the straightforward plot is not a cheesy text. It’s not like simplicity is everything but it makes this movie unique because of such a plot. Well, I’m not sure if I only need to compare “Your Name” in addition to the many comparatives in this review. But, this movie has a truly, truly extraordinary achievement. This movie discusses the culture of modern Japanese youth, magically, about trust, traditional rituals, and the dark side of Tokyo life. For Shinkai, he just felt awkward with a compliment he got for “Your Name”. He was really deserved and in “Weathering with You”, he showed a mysticism about the beauty of the weather, a place where the sea is nothing. There is something people have never seen if the sky exceeds what the sea surpassed. And from this film, all were reflections of Tokyo life, never realizing whether it’s rain or sunny, we just never give thanks to God. “Your Name” is captivating, as is “Weathering with You”. Both of the movies explore star-crossed lovers like different dimensions or different things, myths, traditional beliefs, and narrative gear. There is a contemporary Japanese social commentary or the world about myths we never know how mysterious they are. From its simplicity with complex alike, this movie is just gorgeous and you can see it in every corner. There is so much detail. The interaction between characters is natural and each character has a personification. Hina is not really a real character but more like a “fiction” in a traditional mythological story. She is magical, fantastic, but also still leaves an essence about the pixie-dreamy girl character like Charlie Kaufman. Likewise “Your Name”, I think Makoto Shinkai and Charlie Kaufman have the same touch about dreams, reality, reflection, and life. The movie doesn’t really have any characters other than Hodaka and Hina but at least has three supporting characters. Oh, did I forget there are easter eggs in this film too? Like in “Your Name”, there is a minor character from “The Garden of Words”, another Shinkai work. But, I don’t want to tell it unless you see it on the internet or just watch it. The characters don’t give us a background of what and how. It’s just a vivid image, doesn’t fully support what these characters actually do. Hodaka, the main protagonist, didn’t really take or choose actions or choices in front of him. The plot is just trying to encourage the main character to act, waiting so he has the motive of why he exists in the first place. Yet, another sub-plot and third act really, really pushed him fully when the antagonist came. He started acting actively. Through a force of weather, Tokyo, which used to perceive rain in summer is one of the most strange phenomena and floods is a disaster to be a beautiful story. Simply put, there is a vibe of “The Day After Tomorrow” when the second act climax came. Through sacrifice, this is a dependency. Living with people we love, their happiness is our happiness as well, and the weather is not one of the things it makes our lives stop. Yet, I’m not a fan of a happy ending I guess but it’s acceptable for this movie. There is a point where you want to see Makoto Shinkai’s work again after this movie. What will he write and direct next? A love about what? A black screen starts to close the screen but I’m starting to obsess over RADWIMPS again and drizzle. This movie is not really complex when comparing it to “Your Name”. This is more straightforward than “Your Name”. “Weathering with You” is a heartwarming and light film, more charming, more lively, and invites a smooth sympathy to the characters. The sound design, the soundtrack, even a cameo, this movie is just amazing. This movie is so thick with local culture, about natural disasters as a fantasy, simple but still lovable. If you want to call this a bad movie, of course, it was because this is not “Your Name”. But, this is “Weathering with You”, a weather love story.
